Olympia Indie Folk Showcase at Northwest Folklife, Seattle, May 24, 2009

I went to the Olympia Indie Folk showcase at the Center House Theatre for Folklife last Saturday, but was too overwhelmed by the musical goodness to remember to tape anything. Apparently, the Folklife staff was also, because I don’t see any recordings on their recordings page for that day (though Letters, Nextdoor Neighbors, and the Hail Seizures are up there and they all rock!)

Anyway, Eleanor Murray kicked off the Olympia showcase, but during her set, I was running the Bicycle table, so I didn’t hear much of her music. What I did hear sure sounded nice, and the couple hundred people in the audience were certainly listening in an appreciative silence.

June Madrona came on next, and I got to play a couple songs on the melodica with them! I also sat back and heard a bunch of their new songs. I love Ross’s songwriting style, and Danielle, Sean, and Molly are all awesome at their instruments (flute, banjo, and cello!). I’m really excited for them to record.

Polka Dot Dot Dot followed June Madrona and totally blew everyone away, as usual. Jordan, Colleen, and Onyx dressed up in old summer clothes (complete with a cardboard flower on Jordan’s hat!) and wrapped their set with claps and a capella singing. Jordan said they’ve just finished recording their latest album—their first has been out for a year or two now—and it’s going to be mixed and mastered soon, then released on Bicycle Records.
